Albuquerque International Sunport stands as a gateway to adventure, culture, and connectivity, welcoming travelers with open arms and cutting-edge facilities. Whether journeying for business or leisure, passengers can expect a smooth and comfortable experience as they explore the enchanting vistas and rich heritage of the region or jet off to global destinations.

In an ongoing effort to elevate the passenger experience, the airport has prioritized enhancing security and reliability while optimizing critical operations such as TSA and the 911 call center. Wagner Equipment Co., a trusted local CAT dealer renowned for its partnership with Active Power, stepped in to address the airport’s needs, initially focusing on replacing aging generators.

However, discussions quickly revealed a critical concern with the previous solution: a 10-second power outage during genset startup. To ensure a seamless transition and uninterrupted operations, CAT Wagner Equipment Co. introduced the airport decision-makers to the Active Power CLEANSOURCE® flywheel UPS.

Active Power Flywheel UPS systems are chosen to support critical infrastructure at airports worldwide for their ability to ensure continuous operations, keep baggage handling systems running smoothly, maintain security, enhance passenger experience, minimize delays, and generate cost savings. With higher operating efficiency and lower total cost of ownership compared to chemical battery alternatives, Active Power Flywheel UPS systems offer a reliable and efficient solution without the need for temperature-controlled battery rooms or frequent replacements.

The solution deployed at Albuquerque Sunport included four CLEANSOURCE® XT MMS UPS systems, each offering 500kW of battery-free power protection and boasting up to 98% efficiency. In addition, four external 1000A Maintenance Bypass Cabinets were provided to enhance operational efficiency and safety.

The successful implementation of the Flywheel UPS systems ensures the comfort and security of passengers while granting peace of mind to airport staff. Looking ahead, the airport plans to install two additional 500kW Active Power Flywheel UPS systems to protect a repurposed baggage claim area, further solidifying its commitment to reliability and efficiency.

With Active Power Flywheel UPS systems in place, Albuquerque International Sunport continues to soar to new heights, ensuring uninterrupted skies and seamless operations for all who pass through its gates.
