Active Power's patented technology powers the world's first commercially viable integrated flywheel and UPS system. In 1996, the company set out to innovate energy storage and power quality solutions that would improve system reliability, while lowering the cost of electric power for broad industry users, including advanced data centers, industrial facilities, and broadcast stations. More than a decade later, CleanSource technology has over 40 million hours of proven field operations and is endorsed by leading power-quality consultants who are aware of the industry's reliance on problematic-lead acid batteries.

Active Power's CleanSource is an integrated flywheel motor-generator that stores kinetic energy in its constantly spinning, quiet, low-friction steel disc. Stored energy from the flywheel is instantly converted to electricity and powers the critical load during utility disturbances, or until a standby generator takes over. Two CleanSource-based products are available: CleanSource DC energy storage system and CleanSource UPS - a complete uninterruptible power supply system.
